Why Does the Zodiac Begin with Aries?

The zodiac begins with Aries because the classical system uses the March equinox as zero degrees of ecliptic longitude. It does not begin there because a group of ram-shaped stars is objectively first in the sky. The next thirty-degree interval is called Aries, followed by eleven equal intervals around the circle.
Begin with the ecliptic
Seen from Earth, the Sun traces an annual path against the stellar background. This path is the ecliptic. Dividing its 360 degrees into twelve equal sections produces twelve signs. The signs are therefore coordinates before they are personality descriptions.
At the March equinox the Sun crosses the celestial equator from south to north. Day and night are approximately equal, and northern-hemisphere spring begins. Using this observable seasonal hinge as zero gives the circle four structural points: the two equinoxes and two solstices, each separated by ninety degrees.
Why retain the name Aries?
More than two millennia ago, the equinox lay closer to the stellar region associated with Aries. Precession slowly shifts the equinoctial point against the stars, so it no longer occupies the same constellation background.
The tropical zodiac continues to define zero Aries by the current equinox. Sidereal zodiacs apply an offset to maintain a relationship with a stellar reference. One preserves seasonal alignment; the other preserves stellar alignment. The difference concerns the chosen origin of longitude, not one side discovering the “real Aries.”
Sign and constellation are different objects
In careful English, Aries may still refer either to a thirty-degree astrological sign or to the irregular astronomical constellation. The surrounding sentence must make the distinction clear. “The Sun is no longer in the constellation Aries at the equinox” does not invalidate a tropical coordinate whose zero point is defined by that equinox.
Before evaluating a claim, ask whether it concerns a constellation boundary, a tropical sign, or a sidereal sign. The same traditional name can label different maps.
A coordinate can remain useful after its history changes
Zero longitude is a convention in every circular coordinate system. Astronomers likewise choose reference planes, epochs, and origins so that observations can be compared. The important questions are whether the origin is stated, whether the system is internally consistent, and whether a claim stays within what that coordinate can establish.
The tropical zodiac does not prove an astrological interpretation merely by using the equinox, just as precession does not disprove the coordinate. Astronomy describes how the positions are defined and calculated; interpretive claims require their own reasoning. Keeping those tasks separate produces a more useful discussion than asking which named Aries is “real.”
