Why a Clear Birth Time Can Change the Bazi Hour Pillar

A birth certificate may clearly say 15:10 while two charts assign different double hours. The stem-branch table is usually not the problem; the programs have converted “15:10” under different time standards.

Civil time is defined by a time zone

Mainland China uses UTC+8. Noon on the clock does not mean the Sun is crossing every local meridian. A program using civil time and another converting longitude to local mean or apparent solar time can disagree near a boundary.

Historical rules cannot be guessed from today

China observed daylight saving from 1986 to 1991, and earlier cities experienced other standards. Overseas records likewise require the law in force at the place and date of birth. Reliable software uses a historical database such as IANA rather than subtracting a current offset by hand.

Apparent solar time also includes the equation of time, not only longitude. Traditions disagree over whether to apply it. The essential requirement is to state the choice and avoid applying the same correction twice.

Keep a reproducible time record

Preserve the original clock entry, place, record precision, historical zone, and daylight-saving rule. Then list any solar-time conversion and its result. Near a boundary, retain both hour pillars instead of selecting one through later life events.

Diagnose disagreement in a fixed order

Compare the raw date, clock time, place, and calendar first. Next inspect the historical UTC offset and daylight-saving flag. Only then compare longitude correction, equation-of-time correction, and the program's double-hour boundaries.

This prevents double correction. If software already converted a place to local solar time and the user subtracts longitude again, the same factor is applied twice. Reproducing each intermediate timestamp is more reliable than choosing whichever pillar seems to fit a biography.
