The Ten Gods are not ten supernatural beings. They are names for ten relationships. Four Pillars takes the day stem as the reference, compares another stem through Five Phase generation and control, then distinguishes matching or different yin-yang polarity.
Five directions become ten relationships
From the Day Master's perspective, another phase can be the same as self, produced by self, controlled by self, controlling self, or producing self. Polarity divides each direction into two.
For a Jia Wood Day Master, Jia is Peer and Yi Rob Wealth; Bing and Ding are both produced by Wood but become Eating God and Hurting Officer according to polarity. Change the Day Master and the relationship changes. A stem does not carry one Ten Gods label by itself.
The names are social metaphors
Wealth, Officer, and Seal come from traditional models of resources and social relation. They are memorable and easy to literalize: Wealth becomes money, Officer a job, and Hurting Officer a rebellious personality.
It is safer to begin with function. Wealth can concern resources subject to exchange or management; Officer can concern constraint, duty, or standards; Seal can concern support, knowledge, or authorization. Context decides the concrete form.
“Direct” and “Indirect” arise first from polarity rules, not moral worth. One relationship can also help or burden: constraint may supply a boundary, while support may produce dependence.
Derive before memorizing
Take one Day Master and write who generates or controls whom and whether polarity matches. Deriving the labels is more reliable than memorizing ten character portraits.
A relationship name is not a diagnosis
The same controlling relationship can appear as pressure, duty, law, professional standards, or a needed boundary. A producing relationship can supply learning and support or create dependence. Pillar position, visibility, strength, and interaction with other stems and branches all affect the reading.
This is why a single Ten God should not determine career, marriage, or personality. Begin with the calculable relation, state the traditional metaphor, and test the proposal against the chart as a whole and the person's actual circumstances.
